Technical and ethical issues for plagiarism-free citations in times of artificial intelligence

This experience report aims to guide the academic community on technical issues (standards) and, above all, ethical issues (respect for authorship) in writing citations without plagiarism. Plagiarism, which has been so enhanced or facilitated by the use of artificial intelligence, has been neglected by some authors. For this reason, this experience report seeks to show what seems obvious but is not: the concept and use of direct and indirect citations, as well as the ethical problem of using artificial intelligence. The authors, through the experience they have gained as professors and editors of scientific journals, show how both ignorance of technical standards and mistaken knowledge of what a citation is, lead authors to commit plagiarism.
