Historical development of the impact factor (fi) on the brazilian periods web science (wos) between 2008 and 2018

The Impact Factor (FI) has been published since 1972 by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and, although it is not unanimous among researchers, is the leading quality indicator for journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database. The present study aimed to present the IF historical series of Brazilian journals indexed on this basis from 1997. In the mentioned year, there were 11 indexed journals; in 2008, 31 and 2018, 165. Currently 99 journals presents IF> 0.5 (62.7%), 54 presents IF> 1.0 (34.2%), 10 presents IF> 2.0 (6.3%) and 2 presents IF> 3.0 (1, 3%). The evident growth of this metric, especially in the last 10 years, is mainly due to three factors: CAPES Qualis' increasing demand for graduate programs to always prioritize indexed, arbitrated and high IF journals for publication of the results obtained; the consolidation of the SciELO library requiring standardization and indexing quality at its base; and ABEC acting tirelessly in qualifying Brazilian Publishers since 1985 in order to improving the metrics, indexing and quality of publications. These encouraging results definitely insert and globalize the science published in Brazilian journals in the competitive publishing market.
