Health literacy is a crucial factor in treatment adherence and achieving better clinical outcomes in transplant patients. This article analyzed the topic of health literacy and open access, focusing on articles published in the Brazilian Journal of Transplantation (BJT). A search on the BJT website using the descriptor "health literacy" returned three articles. As an open-access scientific journal, BJT articles reach diverse audiences and can help people make healthcare decisions. Open science, of which open access is one aspect and is exemplified by BJT, is fundamental to the democratization of health knowledge, benefiting both the scientific community and the general public.
