A Decade of Peer Review: In Pursuit of Equity and Diversity

The quality of scientific journals is closely linked to peer review, which is essential for validating publications. The Journal of Epidemiology and Infection Control (RECI) stands out for its commitment to quality and the broad participation of its reviewers. Between 2014 and 2023, RECI had 617 reviewers, with an annual average of 62, and a predominance of women (73%). Despite efforts to maintain diversity in the origin of reviewers, the Central-West region was not represented. The high concentration of institutions in the Southeast, its influence on reviewer distribution, and the lack of regional representation may affect the diversity of perspectives and the quality of the review process. RECI should implement strategies to engage international reviewers and those from underrepresented regions, promoting a more diverse and inclusive review process.
